Thunderstorms struck Oxford and Lafayette County Thursday afternoon leaving downed trees and many residents temporarily without power.

The thuderstorms and strong winds ended before 4 p.m. leaving roads strewn with leaves and debris.

"We had some really strong winds that knocked over some trees and limbs," said Johnnie Earnest, Oxford Electric Department superintendent. "It was not lighting, just wind right before it started raining."

Power outages were reported across Oxford and Lafayette County, some for up to two hours.

"We had spots (of outages)," Earnest said. "But we got everything back."

The Oxford Fire Department was called to the Icehouse on Van Buren to investigate a report of a lightning strike. They found no damage and no fire, Chief Jerry Johnson said.
