The Associated Student Body Cabinet discussed the closure of Hefley Hall at their meeting Monday night at El Charro.
Clarence Webster, III the executive liaison for ASB, met with Bill McCartney to discuss the closure of Hefley.
The 50 students that remain in Hefley had the option of moving into other residence halls but instead voted to move to the Zeta house, Webster said. There were originally 139 residents in Hefley, 90 of which signed up at the last orientation. Each resident knew prior to the August move-in that they would be moving out again in a few months.
The members of Hefley will have a general move-out day sometime in October. The university will provide a truck and campus organizations will help with the hassle of moving the residents to the Zeta house. The Zeta house will allow its residents the same telecommunications and Internet access as the other residence halls.
Renovations on the Zeta house are not limited to housing the Hefley residents. There are plans to turn the house into an academic building in 2001.
Hefley will re-open in the fall of 2001 but its lobby will not be ready until 2002.
Next year Kincannon will be closed and renovated into offices and one-third of Crosby will be closed for renovations. With all the dorm renovations in the fall of 2001, there will be 235 fewer rooms here on campus, Webster said.
"Mr. McCartney assured me that there would not be a dorm overflow in the future," Webster said. "We know that this is a huge inconvenience but the ASB is confident that Mr. McCartney is doing everything to make things run as smooth as possible."
The Cabinet also discussed plans for the first Senate meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Turner Center. There will be open seats for all those who wish to attend.
