Beautiful
Rated PG-13
This one's prereviews have all involved the word "ugly." Mona Hibbard (Minnie Driver) is an ill-tempered young woman living in small-town America. Her one dream, to win the Miss America pageant, is hindered by the fact that she has an eight-year-old illegitimate daughter, Vanessa (Hallie Kate Eisenberg). However, with the help of her best friend, Ruby (Joey Lauren Adams), she is able to get herself into competition and then steadily rise to the top. The closer Mona gets to her dream, the more passionate she feels about her role as Vanessa's mom. It is also the directorial debut from Sally Field, who apparently should have just stayed home.
Remember the Titans
Rated PG
Remember the Titans tells the true story of Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), an African-American football coach who led a racially divided high school team, the Titans, to victory in 1971 Alexandria, Virginia. Boone overcame racial prejudices and bigotry among his team and other coaches, teaching players respect, dedication, and strength. He was therefore a huge inspiration and role model to the team, and made a great impact on the small, closed-minded southern community. An excellent depiction of a stunning story, Boaz Yakin's film will inspire audiences. Produced by action guru Jerry Bruckheimer, this one should feature a Disney-ized version of Oliver Stone's "Any Given Sunday."
The Exorcist
Rated R
When people first saw "The Exorcist," people truly had a new perspective of good and evil. This movie is a must-see, no matter who you are. It's fascinating look at "the belief in evil, and the belief that evil can be cast out" is an extraordinary experience that few will ever forget.
Now back in theaters, with added footage, the perennial horror classic would scare
Based on a true story of an exorcism ordained by the Catholic church, a young girl begins acting strangely. After a priest commits suicide after visiting young Regan MacNeil's (Linda Blair, in the role that started and ended her acting career) room, she exhibits strange symptoms, including levitation and great strength.
When all medical possibilities are exhausted, her mother is sent to a priest who is also a psychiatrist. He becomes convinced that Regan is possessed and he and a second priest experienced in exorcism try to drive the spirit from Regan before she dies. Two priest tried to cast the demon out of her and both died by trying to do so. On a personal note, let me tell you the affect that "The Exorcist" had on me. After I saw it, I took Legos and formed crucifixes around my bed, and slept with a Bible on the night stand so I could smack the devil in the jaw if he came calling. I laid in bed, fearing pea soup, and wondering how I would react if the Devil came for me. I was horrified for weeks. Ask my parents. I slept with them a good many nights afterwards.
