Oxford and Ole Miss will welcome one of their own back to town this weekend when Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott comes to Oxford.

At 5:30 p.m on Friday, Sept. 29, a "Trent Lott Welcome" will be held in honor of Mississippi's own Lott at the Park Place Inn (formerly the Ramada) on West Jackson Avenue.

Lott (R-Miss.) is an Ole Miss alumnus and former Rebel cheerleader.

"Everyone is invited to meet Senator Lott and make him welcome to our community," said Ed Meek, spokesman for the organizers of the event.

"This is not a fundraiser. This is simply a means to express to Senator Lott our great appreciation for his national leadership and to thank him for guiding hundreds of millions of federal dollars to Mississippi and, more specifically, to Oxford and Ole Miss."

The event is being hosted by the Lafayette County Republican Committee, Lafayette County Republican Women, Ole Miss College Republicans and a collection of other Oxford and university citizens.

"There are very few people who have had the opportunity to make the contribution to our community, state and nation that has been made and continues to be made by Trent Lott," said Ole Miss College Republican Executive Director George Haymans.

"We are most grateful for his leadership and want him to know how much our community appreciates him. I hope everyone will participate."

Anyone is welcome to attend. The event will be held in the grand ballroom. For further details or information, please call (662) 236-5510.
