The Oxford City Council voted to adopt an ordinance renewing the Galaxy Cable Co. franchise under different terms than those proposed previously by the company.
On June 14, a new franchise renewal contract was proposed by Galaxy for five years, John Dunbar said.
Questions were asked about the new terms by council members. It was mentioned that this franchise renewal would take place in two years as Galaxy still has two years left in its current contract. The ordinance renewing the franchise for Galaxy under different terms was accepted.
"I think this forum is as good as it will get," Dunbar said. "Galaxy has been very reasonable and cooperative."
The funding for a trail in Oxford Park was accepted. The Public Works Commission could build the entire walking-jogging trail except for the track surface. The rubber track surface, which is like the surface on the university track, was looked at for pricing. The pricing of the rubber surface was around $200,000 for the needed 8,500 feet to cover the track, Public Works Director David Bennett said.
"We're looking at alternative surfaces, which are in the range of $45,000 to $50,000," Bennett said.
A change order for Oxford Electric Department site in the amount of $5,727.30 was accepted because of an odd size pipe needed for construction purposes.
Two resolutions were proposed by Mayor Pat Lamar and adopted by the council. The first resolution was proposed to make next week Oct. 8-15 Fire Prevention Week. The resolution encouraged members of the community to adopt a home fire escape plan and for it to be practiced two times per year."
The Fire Prevention Week will be held in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871," Lamar said in the resolution.
The second resolution discussed the awareness of eye disease caused by diabetes. Lamar proclaimed October Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month.
