Kosovo conflict should be a reminder of American roots
Dear Editor,
I must say that I am tired of one thing. The negative aspects of the Kosovo crisis have been projected across the cover of The Daily Mississippian, featured on Channel 12 Newswatch and picketed in front of Fulton Chapel for the past few weeks.
I am finally disgusted with this anti-government behavior. Perhaps we have all forgotten Adolf Hitler or the fascist regimes of Mussolini. We all have duties and obligations as Americans, and those duties are to protect those who can not protect themselves against brute force and violence.
Whether or not this skirmish has anything to do with the United States is not the point. The fact of the matter is there is a battle waging in a country that has been killing people for years. Just because this is the way it has been for years does not make killing, or war, right. Someone must end this war, and it does not seem to be the Serbs or the Albanians.
The United States of America is a global super-power. Along with being a superpower comes the obligation to defend all those countries that lack the force to defend themselves. We have freedom and don't have to worry about Alabama or Louisiana declaring war on us anytime soon.
Similarly, does it not seem fair to strive for others to have the same peace of mind we take for granted?
As far as I am concerned, if I get my draft card in the mail, I will proudly stand up and ask which plane to board because that is what it means to be an American. Sadly, I think the grace and glamour of the fireworks have skewed the appropriate meaning of July the 4th. May we all remember what it means, as Americans, to do what is necessary and not what is convenient.
