At The University of Mississippi, whether you're registering for classes, checking grades or accepting financial aid, online is the place to be. With wired and wireless connectivity in every residence hall and available across campus, students can log on and utilize Web-based library catalogs, student services and Blackboard's course management software. IT makes taking part in college life more convenient than ever.
The Office of Information Technology (IT) manages many campus technology services, including the university's enterprise wide computing facilities and the campus network. The Mississippi Center for Supercomputing Research (MCSR) is located on the UM campus and operated under IT's authority. IT also manages the Galtney Center for Academic Computing, located in Weir Hall next to the J.D. Williams Library, a central hub for student computing on campus.
The IT Helpdesk, Helpdesk Store, IT Labs, IT Multimedia and the Faculty Technology Development Center are located in the Galtney Center for Academic Computing. This facility offers wireless access and numerous hard-wired network ports throughout the building and even outside in the patio area.
The IT Helpdesk, centrally located in Weir Hall, is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We're happy to assist anyone in the university community with issues related to software, hardware and networking. We provide support for e-mail, Web pages and other applications that run on the university's campuswide systems. Come by or call us at 662-915-5222. Visit www.olemiss.edu/helpdesk for more information.
The IT Labs are the only general usage labs on campus and provide a wide range of computers and software for students to use. The main lab has PCs, Macs, printers, scanners and a copy machine. During the fall and spring semesters, the lab is open 24 hours a day on weekdays. The warm and spacious design makes it a great place to visit, whether you're checking e-mail between classes or pulling an all-nighter for an assignment.
See www.olemiss.edu/itlabs for current hours and a list of the available software and equipment.
The IT Labs also offer a small high-end multimedia lab for student use. The room features five PCs and a Mac, video-editing hardware and software, and a projector and screen. Students can work together here to produce and rehearse class presentations. Visit www.olemiss.edu/itlabs/medialab.html for reservations.
The olemiss.edu address is the primary means of communicating important messages from the administration and faculty to students. Users can forward e-mail sent to this address to another account, if necessary, but university-generated messages will not be sent directly to other accounts.
While you can print at the Galtney Center for a small fee, having your own printer is a great convenience. Additionally, a USB memory key (also known as a flash drive) comes in handy for storage and file transfer.
The University of Mississippi has arrangements with several vendors to offer tech products to students, faculty and staff at a reduced price. One of these is e-academy, Inc., where a student can purchase software such as Microsoft Office at about a fifth of the regular retail price. Visit the Helpdesk Store in Weir Hall or online at hdstore.olemiss.edu for Apple products and basic accessories like network cables. More vendor partners are listed at www.olemiss.edu/computers.
The University of Mississippi is a very wired place, so it's not hard to find high-speed, reliable network access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wireless access is available in all residence halls, the library, the Student Union, and several other buildings across campus.
