Getting Started with Mailing ListsLast Updated: 20 July 2001
What is a Mailing List?
One benefit of using e-mail is the ability to join electronic mailing
lists. Mailing lists, or electronic mailing lists, are simply mail reflectors. Participants
subscribe to a list and then all messages sent (or "posted") to that list
are forwarded to those subscribed. Mailing lists facilitate ongoing
e-mail discussions and are best suited for settings where interactivity
among multiple participants is desired rather than one-way communication.
Mailing lists can be set up as open subscription, closed subscription, and/or moderated. In an open subscription mailing list, anyone can subscribe, while in a closed subscription mailing list, the list owner must approve all subscription requests. In a moderated mailing list, each posting to the list must be approved by the mailing list owner.
What is Majordomo?
Majordomo is one tool for automating the management of mailing lists.
Commands are sent via e-mail to Majordomo to handle maintenance of the
list. For example, users can subscribe to a list by sending an e-mail
message to Majordomo.
