Security Tips
SETTING UP YOUR COMPUTER
- Visit my.olemiss.edu and select Free Antivirus Software from the Index to get your FREE copy of Symantec AntiVirus!
- Create STRONG PASSWORDS that you can remember.
- Turn OFF file sharing.
- Enable your operating system FIREWALL
- Turn off or delete any software features that are not needed.
ON A FREQUENT BASIS
- Keep your anti-virus software definitions updated.
- Don't allow files from unknown sources on your computer.
- Regularly install Windows Updates
- Keep your application software updated
- Back up data files.
PHYSICAL SECURITY
- Ssshhh! Keep your passwords secret. Do not write them down and keep them at your desk.
- Install laptop and desktop locks (see http://us.kensington.com/html/11179.html).
