Founded in 1989, AWARE is a non-profit, tax exempt, public education group directed and advised by respected scientists, physicians, citizens, and industry members. AWARE is funded by donations from diverse sources including health professionals, industry members, and consumers.

All contributions are unrestricted in their use, and AWARE adheres to the Standards for Commercial Support of Continuing Medical Education of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) in all of its conferences and symposia.

AWARE's priorities are:

• to monitor the scientific research regarding the health effects of moderate alcohol consumption
• to address the educational needs of health care professionals regarding the risks and benefits of moderate alcohol consumption
• to serve as an information clearinghouse for health professionals, media, opinion leaders, and industry members

We are concentrating our energies in educating health care professionals, particularly physicians, because we have found that doctors and other primary care providers often are unaware of the latest research available. Our focus on physicians provides accurate and timely information to those who can communicate it to the consumers most credibly.

To accomplish this critical objective, we are using four key elements:

1. An Internet Website - This website provides a quick and efficient means of communicating thoroughly documented, current scientific knowledge about alcohol and health effects at varying levels of technical detail. This website also provides timely health alerts on new research as well as an archival database of previous research.

2. Symposia - AWARE has presented educational programs featuring members of the prestigious Medical/Scientific Council to attendees of several medical professional meetings.

3. Scientific Database - Our current database is continually being expanded and made available to both health care professionals and the general public.

4. Speakers Bureau - We have a number of skilled speakers available to make presentations on a variety of alcohol and health-related issues.
