A mailing list has been setup for SAACS chapter members. The mailing
list should allow for faster communication between members and provide
a forum for discussing topics of importance to chemistry and the department.
Contact Ms. Scott for more information.
SAACS is designing it's yearly T-Shirt. (Who
at Ole Miss doesn't have a T-Shirt for an organization or event ;-)
Some entries were submitted by the November 19 deadline. The final
decisions will be made at the next SAACS chapter meeting.
Contact Ms. Scott for more information.
A series of short demonstrations of organic lab equipment
and techniques is being planned. Help is needed for investigating
the cost of making a videotape, and for planning the actual segments to
be taped. At this point the project can either be a videotape to
be shown to the classes or may possible become a series of slide show presentations
that can be set up in the chemistry computer lab.
Anyone interested in helping contact Ms. Scott.
Demonstrations Team
A Demo Team which could go out to the local schools is being planned. The idea is to be available to the local teachers and demonstrate various chemical "magic tricks" as they need to fit in with their lectures. Volunteers to do the demos and to publicize the team are needed.
To volunteer or get more information see Polly Brinkley.
As everyone knows, money is needed to do some of the more fun projects SAACS is involved with. Caleb is actively involved in several ideas for fundraising. See him if interested.
SAACS members at the last regular meeting expressed a strong desire to plan and visit an chemical industry facility. Two plants have been selected and tentative plans are underway to visit the plants in the Spring Term. Contact Caleb if you'd like to help in making the arrangements.
The SAACS Ole Miss constitution has not been seriously
looked at in a few years. Alex Fong is heading up a committee to
look at the paperwork of SAACS to see if any changes need to be made.
Have an interest? Let him know.
Yearly, the American Chemical Society designates
the first week of November as National Chemistry Week (NCW).
Student Affiliate and ACS Local Sections around the nation make a special
effort to raise the awareness of chemistry in the public arena during this
time. Noted efforts by groups around the country include: the
mention of NCW on the Today Show, the creation of a "periodic table cake"
(One element per cake) and the display of "large periodic table wave"
(each element was a placard).
At Ole Miss past events have included a chemistry
day in which high school students were invited by the chemistry department
and pharmacy school for a field day, coloring contests for elementary age
children, and as started last year, the demonstrations table at the mall.
Update:
On November 7, SAACS members setup a demonstrations table next to the J.C.
Penny store in the Oxford Mall. From 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. SAACS members
Polly Brinkley, Caleb Clark, Nykeba King, Yolanda Pickney, Will Rottering,
and Kerri Scott showed off demonstrations such as acid-base color changes,
temperature-vapor pressure effects (Polly's favorite), invisible ink writing
for kids (Nykeba and Yolanda's favorite), effects of liquid nitrogen (Caleb's
favorite), and the burning money trick (Ms. Scott's favorite). Additionally,
the "too dangerous for the mall" demos (i.e., thermite demonstrations)
were setup on videotape.
SAACS also wishes to thank and acknowledge the contributions
made to the table by the ACS - Ole Miss local section. The
Ole Miss section provided free literature such as issues of Chem Matters,
and gifts such as pencils, "beaker buddies", rubber balls, pocket periodic
tables, and buttons for handout to the children and adults visiting the
table.
Overall traffic at the demo table remain steady
but not overcrowded the entire afternoon. We all had the impression
that the children visiting the table enjoyed the display greatly.
All the SAACS members participating certainly did!
SAACS has just finished the tailgate for the LSU game. Chicken tenders, chips, salsa, and other food was available. The tailgate was setup in front of Coulter Hall from 9:00 a.m.-gametime. A rough estimate of about 100 people stopped by during that time. Many thanks to Lib Morgan, Alex Fong, and Caleb Clark for their hard work in getting the tailgate together.
SAACS held its annual pizza party/recruitment drive on September 25. Pizza and drinks were available at noon in the front of Coulter Hall. The pizzas went quickly and we easily had about 100-150 students, faculty, and graduate students pass by.
Other activities are in the works - please give your suggestions to Caleb. If you'd like to volunteer to organize the next social event let us know!
SAACS purchased a club photo slot in the upcoming
Ole Miss annual. The picture was taken October 7, 1998.
