MSG Michael W. Howland entered active duty from Lubbock, Texas in 1988. He enlisted as an Infantryman and graduated from Basic/AIT and Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA. From 1989-2006, MSG Howland was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY and served with the Long Range Surveillance Detachment, 2/17 CAV, 101st Pathfinder Detachment, 2/17 CAV and the Sabulauski Air Assault School. From 1996-2000, MSG Howland was assigned to United States Army Recruiting Command, Salt Lake City Battalion, and served as a recruiter and Station Commander. In 2000, MSG Howland was assigned to 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment –Delta where he served until being assigned to the Rebel Battalion in June 2010. MSG Howland's military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Saudi Arabia/Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Campaign Star and Iraq Campaign Medal w/ 3 Bronze Campaign Stars. MSG Howland has been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd Award), Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge and the Army Gold Recruiter badge w/ 3 Sapphires. MSG Howland is married to the former Kara K. Freeland and they have two children, Nicholas and Emily.
