MAJ Walt Vinzant

MAJ George W. Vinzant enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1981. He graduated from Basic Training at Paris Island, SC and served seven years as an enlisted Marine. Upon leaving the Corps, he attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was commissioned in 1990 from the Mississippi Military Academy as an Infantry Officer. Upon graduation he attended the Infantry Officers Basic Course and Ranger Course. His first assignment was in the 154Th Regiment RTI, Camp Shelby where he served as a Tactical Officer. In 1992 he was assigned to Alpha Company, 2ND Battalion, 20TH Special Forces Group. 1LT Vinzant attended the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg where he completed the Special Forces Officer's Qualification Course, Survival-Evasion-Resistance-Escape (SERE) Course, and the SOF Language Course (Spanish). He served as an Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) Executive Officer, was promoted to Captain and served as an ODA Team Commander. In 1998, CPT Vinzant served as the Company Commander for HHC(-), Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center. He attended the Infantry Captains Career Course at Fort Benning, GA. In 2002, he served as a Battle Captain for the 155TH Separate Armored Brigade, Tupelo, MS. In 2004 CPT Vinzant served as the S4 and S3 Air for the 2-198TH Armored Battalion. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Major and served as the Battalion Executive Officer. He deployed with his unit to Iraq in 2005 and 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism. He returned from his last deployment in March 2010. MAJ Vinzant's military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Navy Achievement Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Reserve Achievement Medal, and the Marine Good Conduct Medal. He has been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Special Forces Badge, Ranger Badge, U.S. Army Parachutist Badge, Honduran Parachutist Badge, and the Bolivian Parachutist Badge. MAJ Vinzant is married to Tammy Badeaux Vinzant since 1985 and they have three children, Olivia, John, and Mary Katherine.
