Constitution of the Ole Miss Chess Club
Article I. - Purpose
The purpose of this organization is to promote the game of Chess as a means of recreation and friendly competition, and to assist its members and others in the development of their skill at the game.
Article II. - Membership
Any member in good standing of the faculty, staff, or student body of the University of Mississippi is eligible for membership.
Article III. - Dues and Club Funds
If necessary, the club may require members to pay dues for the purchase of equipment, sponsorship of tournaments, advertising, social activities, or other expenses. The amount of these dues must be approved by a simple majority of the voting members. Every effort shall be made to minimize the amount of club dues.
Any expenditure of club funds must be approved by the Executive Committee, and may be blocked by a simple majority of the voting members.
Article IV. - Voting
Each member shall have the right to vote at club meetings, provided his or her membership dues are paid.
Article V. - Expulsion
The Executive Committee shall have the power to suspend or expel any member for just cause. The decision to expel a member may be overturned by a two-thirds majority of the voting members.
Article VI. - Meetings
The club shall meet regularly for practice, match play, and club business. No meetings shall be scheduled during the week of final examinations at the University of Mississippi.
Article VII. - Officers and Executive Committee
The officers of the club shall consist of President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. The club shall elect these officers at the last regular meeting of the school year. These officers make up the Executive Committee.
The President shall direct the club toward the purposes stated in Article I. He or she will also preside over all club business meetings, and appoint special and standing committees to perform various functions when necessary.
The Vice President shall assist the President in the performance of his duties and may exercise all of the powers of the President in his absence.
The Secretary/Treasurer shall keep minutes of club business meetings, maintain a roll of active members, collect dues, and disburse club funds to authorized members of the club. He or she shall also make a periodic report to the voting members of the club regarding the status of club funds.
Article VIII. - Amendments to the Constitution
This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority of the voting members.
