Ice Rebels Fall Short Against LSU

Desoto, MS – The Ole Miss Rebels faced off with the LSU Tigers over the weekend in two evenly contested games that saw the final result take place after regulation in both games.
On Friday night the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. It wasn’t until late in the first period that the Rebels got on the scoreboard with a shorthanded goal scored by William Hagerman assisted by Jon Tietjen with 1:49 left to play in the period. This momentum catapulted the Rebels offense in to the second period. Ole Miss went on to score three more unanswered goals by Taylor Casey, William Hagerman, and Cody Johnson in the second period before heading in to the intermission with a 4-2 lead. In the third period the Rebel’s momentum and offense fizzled as they were only able to attain five shots on goal. This lack of offensive production opened the door for LSU to come back late in the third period with the equalizing goal scored with only 3:42 to play in regulation. In overtime, the Rebel’s offensive woes continued as they only garnered two shots in the extra five minutes, allowing the Tigers to take advantage. With 1:54 left in overtime Brandon Holy of LSU sealed the deal to give LSU a 5-4 overtime victory over the Rebels.
Saturday night saw the Rebels again stumble out of the gate succumbing to a 1-0 deficit early in the first period. However, after only trailing for 1:26 Colin Knight got the Rebels offense started with a blast from beyond the blue line that was followed up later in the period by a goal from Raynor Clifton. Quickly thereafter, LSU came back to tie the game at two heading in to the first intermission. The second period again saw both teams trading the lead as the Rebels started the scoring with a goal from Taylor Casey before surrendering the lead to two LSU goals scored within twenty seconds of one another. Cody Johnson scored with 1:53 left in the second period to tie the game at four before the intermission. The Rebels were quick to regain the lead in the third period as Pat Schnurr scored a power play goal in the first few minutes. However, the Rebel defense was unable to close the door in the third period as LSU again scored late to force a second straight overtime in as many days. Overtime again saw the Rebel offense sputter as they only managed one shot in the extra time. Rebel goaltender Sean Eaton played a clutch role in overtime stopping six LSU shots to help Ole Miss send the game to a shootout. Ole Miss was unable to capitalize in the shootout after Eaton helped the Rebels force two extra shooters as LSU Tiger captain Mike Mayeux scored the deciding goal in the second extra round of the shootout to give LSU a 6-5 victory.
The Ole Miss Rebels will have a weekend off to prepare for another two-game series against in-state rival Mississippi State that will take place at the Bancorp South Arena in Tupelo on Friday, November 20th and Monday, November 23rd.

Rebels 1-1 for the Weekend

It was an exciting weekend for Ole Miss Hockey. The Ice Rebels played their first two home games in history, both against opponent Mississippi State.
The Ice Rebels came out strong on Saturday, with John Oakes scoring the first goal in team history from a nice pass from the corner by Cody Johnson in the first two minutes of the game.
In the second period, the Ice Rebels scored on a similar play, however this time Jon Tietjen found Johnson all alone in front for a routine one-timer goal. Johnson then went on to add another goal a few minutes later assisted by Pat Schnurr. The Ice Rebels' final goal was scored on the powerplay by Raynor Clifton as he batted home a rebound out of mid-air on a shot from Remy Menard.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the third, tying the game at 4 and then notching the go-ahead goal after the Rebels got into some penalty troubles. Trailing 5-4 in the final minutes, Mississippi State added an empty netter with less than a minute to play, making it 6-4 and sealing the win.
On Sunday, the Ice Rebels play was more focused and team-oriented. The end result was a 5-1 victory over the Bulldogs for the first win in team history. The Ice Rebels controlled the puck well for most of the game, outshooting the Bulldogs 51-38.
After playing nearly two scorless periods, defenseman Jake Harvey scored on a blast from the point that gave the Ice Rebels all the momentum going into the final period. The Ice Rebels controlled play and poured it on in the third, adding three more goals by Colin Knight, Tyler Harvey, Taylor Casey, and a final goal on an amazing individual effort by Cody Johnson.
Leading the Ice Rebels from net was Sean Eaton, who was nearly perfect with 37 saves on 38 shots.

UM hockey set for October debut
By Tyler Bourke
Staff Reporter
With the help of Cody Johnson, team president, and head coach Max Graupner, ice hockey has finally made its way to the University of Mississippi as a sanctioned club sport and will begin its official season in Fall 2009 against Middle Tennessee State University at Nashville on October 2.
The IceRebels are in the Western SEC conference of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, a Division III league. Ole Miss will face off against every SEC school (with the exception of Auburn) in the upcoming season, which may consist of up to 20 games continuing into February.
In the ACHA, both the Western and Eastern division finalists go on to face other conference champions throughout the ACHA in the national competition.
The team has high hopes for their first season and expects to go as far as the SEC Championship. However, Johnson sees teams such as No. 4 Tennessee to be a major obstacle in the upcoming season.
“We have really good players, I feel comfortable that we are going to be one of the best in the SEC,” Graupner said. “We want to have a winning season this year and be a competing team in the SEC with a solid fan base.”
“Most of the other programs in our conference have about a fiveyear head start on us,” Johnson said. “It will make our first season as a team a real challenge. But we are a very talented young team and should have no problem holding our own against the older SEC programs.”
With players such as forwards Cody Johnson, prospective junior, prospective sophomores Eddie Grossman and Pat Schnurr and defensemen JJ Palumbo and Wilson Griffing, also prospective sophomores, the team is far from worried.
“We have some great forwards and amazing goaltending,” Palumbo said.
The team’s head coach was carefully handpicked to help ensure the success of the team in the coming season.
Graupner was a professional hockey player in Germany before taking the job at Ole Miss.
The IceRebels’ first home game will be October 23 against rival Mississippi State at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven.
The IceRebels held tryouts early this semester but also plan to hold an additional open tryout next fall.
Johnson said he encourages any students interested in playing to contact him by e-mail at ccjohns2@olemiss.edu.
