Beta Rho Chapter was installed at the University of Mississippi, April 19, 1926. Brother Charles E. Wilson (Sigma) Satrap of the South Atlantic Province installed the chapter and demonstrated the Ritual of Initiation in the office of Dean Henry M. Faser, a member of the charter group. Members of Psi Chapter assisted in the initiation ceremony. Beta Rho Chapter became inactive previous to World War II and was not activated until March 16, 1947. The impressive reactivation ceremony followed by the initiation of seventeen members was directed by Grand Ritualist Ralph W. Clark (Beta Psi) who had the assistance of Brothers E.L. Hammond (Beta Psi), Karl Goldner (Epsilon) and W.W. Johnson (Beta Rho). William Lewis Nobles, former Province VII Satrap and President of Mississippi College was a member of the group whic reactivated the Chapter in 1947. Grand Regent William A. Fitzpatrick presented a plaque to the brothers of Beta Rho Chapter at the Province VII Assembly in Oklahoma City in April, 1976 in honor of its Golden Anniversary. Later in the spring, Order of the Golden Mortar Certificates were presented to the four living charter members, Sidney K. Armstrong, Jr., William E. Hamill, Joe Still, and William C. Tidwell. Beta Rho has received the Outstanding Chapter Award in Province VII three times in the last fifteen years, 1977, 1978, and 1991 and has served as host chapter for Province VII in 1979 and 1991. Beta Rho is extremely proud of the fact that the Executive Director of Kappa Psi, Dr. Robert A. Magarian, is an initiate of Beta Rho and that every Dean in the history of the School of Pharmacy, Henry M. Faser, Elmer L. Hammond, Charles W. Hartman, Wallace L. Guess, and Kenneth B. Roberts has been a Kappa Psi brother. Two of its faculty, Dean Kenneth B. Roberts and Dr. Dewey D. Garner, have served as Grand Regent and Dr. Mickey Smith has served as Editor of The MASK. All three of these Brothers, along with Dr. Magarian, have received Citations of Appreciation honors from the Fraternity. Dr. Wallace Guess served as First Grand Vice Regent. Dr. Garner has served twenty-four years as the Chapter's Grand Council Deputy (1972-1996), and was preceded by longtime Grand Council Deputy, Austin A. Dodge. In 1991 Brother Jeff Jones received the Frank H. Eby Award as the outstanding collegiate member in the nation. In the Spring of 1992 Beta Rho had 82 members, the largest all male chapter in the Fraternity. Over the years Beta Rho has participated in a variety of professional and service projects, the most recent being fund raisers for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association, the Adopt-A-Highway Program, and the Adopt-A-Friend Program at the North Mississippi Retardation Center. Beta Rho sponsored a surprise roast/toast banquet in the Spring of 1992 in honor of Grand Historian Dr. Dewey Garner. Numerous guests were in attendance including Grand Regent Johnny Porter and Grand Vice Regent Paul Hiller. The Chapter presented a check for $1000 to Grand Regent Porter to help in the composition of The History of Kappa Psi. |
