William Joseph (Joey) Paden was born December 23, 1973 in Crisfield, MD. He began studying Isshin-ryu Karate in December of 1983 under Sensei Al Church who trained with first generation student, Tom Lewis. Paden trained and taught in this and other dojo through out the 80's and 90's. In 1999, Sensei Church promoted Paden to San-Dan.

Having seen many differences in the way various Isshin-ryu schools trained, Paden become very concerned with learning and teaching what the founder, Tatsuo Shimabuku, wanted to be taught in Isshin-ryu. Paden asked Church about this and he told him that if he wanted to learn what Shimabuku taught, find Advincula Sensei.

In January of 2000, Paden wrote a letter requesting instruction from Sensei Advincula. He replied and sent Paden to one of his student's, David "Skipper" Knight, who at the time was stationed at Ft. Meade, MD.

In Sept. of 2001, Paden moved to Oceanside, CA for 3 months to train with Advincula Sensei, and before leaving, Joey had the honor of constructing a pergola to provide shade for Advincula's Garden Dojo. In Jan of 2004, Advincula Sensei promoted Joey to San-dan, under the standards of the Isshin-kai. Joey has continued to learn and teach Isshin-ryu as taught by Advincula Sensei. On May 3, 2009, Advincula Sensei promoted Paden to Roku-Dan.

Joey currently teaches at his dojo in Crisfield, MD.  He welcomes everyone wanting to learn Isshin-ryu Karatedo and Kobudo to come join.  He and his students also practice Advincula's Kobudo, Hindiandi and Escrima.
