Alex Choo

Alex Choo was born Feb. 23, 1977 in  Kenora, Ontario, Canada.

1986-1989 He began training in Isshin-ryu karate in September, 1986 at the Kenora Karate Club from Pierre Degagne and Doug Iverson.

1993-1996 He studied again at the Kenora Karate Club from Doug Iverson.

1999 (Oct.-Dec.) He studied in Lloydminster Traditional Tae Kwon Do-Hai Ma

2003 (Mar-Oct) He studies at the Calgary Karate Club from Charles Boyd.

2005 (Jun-Oct) In Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he studies with Sifu Bob Kho, Teck Guan-Fujian White Crane.

In 2003, at the Isshinkai Enbukai gathering held in the Honbu Isshin-ryu Karate Megami dojo, Oceanside, Ca., he was given the nickname Tatsu-Guwa (Little dragon), by Advincula Sensei. In 2007, Tokumura Kensho, Kudan, gave Alex Choo, another nickname, Shorinji Otoku  meaning Shaolin man. It must noted that few foreigners are ever given a martial art nickname by Okinawans. Alex Choo has two martial art nicknames and this alone set him apart from most karateka. Tokumura at two Enbukai often chose Alex Choo to be his uke or demonstrate his kata stating, Alex Choo was his son.

Alex Choo has continued returning to Oceanside, CA to train with Sensei Advincula and his top student, Robert Carona.  This is an accomplishment rarely achieved since his total time training in a formal dojo is less then seven (7) years. Three years from age 9 to 12 at the Kenora Karate Club from Pierre Degagne and Doug Iverson. Three years from age 16 to 19 at the Kenora Karate Club from Doug Iverson. Three months in Tae Kwon Do and about seven to eight months with Sensei Charles Boyd.

Advincula Sensei compares Alex Choo’s number of years within a formal dojo to the years he trained with Isshin-ryu Karate’s founder, Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei on Okinawa over a span of 17 years, from 1958 to 1975. According to Advincula Sensei, “It is not how long one trains, it is now well one trains.”
