ADVISORY NOTE TO MALAYSIAN STUDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Emergency Preparation

Recent warnings of terrorist attacks in the United States have caused Government agencies to tighten security and make contingency plans. The local governments, as ways to protect and prepare the general public, have stepped up emergency plans.

As part of your emergency preparation, we would like to advise you to be ready with basic items for your room or home. Where appropriate, stock them in a duffle bag, camping backpack or a large easy–to-carry container in advance.

These items are as follows:

Personal Documents

• Passport
• 1-20
• Birth certificates
• Transcript
• Student ID
• Insurance card
• Social security card
• Proof of residence (deed or lease)
• Bank account numbers
• Credit card account numbers and companies
• Driver’s license
• Laptop

Money

• Cash
• Debit card/credit card
• Check Book

Food

• Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food that require no refrigeration
• Select items that are compact and lightweight
• Include selection from ready to eat canned food, high-energy food, vitamins, salt, sugar and spices
• Manual can opener
• Plastic cups & plates
• Plastic knife, fork and spoon

Water

• Store water in a plastic container
• Store one gallon of water per person per day for three days
• Prepackaged beverages

Prescription Medications and Non Prescription Drugs

Emergency Kit

• Flash light and plenty of extra batteries
• Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
• First-Aid Kit
• Cell phone and extra batteries
• Map of the area (for locating shelter)
• Whistle
• Paper, pencil
• Tapes
• Matches in waterproof container
• Plastic sheeting
• Aluminum foil
• Car keys

Clothing & Personal items

• Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear
• Warm clothing
• Sturdy walking shoes or work boots
• Hat and gloves
• Eyeglasses
• Rain gear
• Sleeping bag
• Thermal underwear

Sanitation

• Soap
• Feminine supplies
• Toilet paper, towelettes
• Disinfectant
• Liquid detergent
• Plastic garbage bag

Contact/Communication

· Post Emergency phone numbers

(Police, hospitals, fire, ambulance, local emergency medical service)

• International Students Office
• Malaysian Student Department of your region
• Close friends

Entertainment

• Books and games

YOUR EVACUATION PLAN

Local government officials issue evacuation orders when disaster threatened. Listen to radio and television reports when disaster threatens. If local officials ask you to leave, do so immediately.

If Disaster Strikes

Remain calm and patient

Listen to your battery-powered radio for news and instructions

Check for injuries

If you have only moments before leaving, grab these things and go:

• Personal documents
• Money
• Medical supplies: prescription medications
• Disaster supplies: flashlight, batteries, radio, first aid kit, cell phone, bottled water
• Clothing and bedding: a change of clothes, a sleeping bag and pillow
• Car keys
