Supporting NEA's Read Across America

From the earliest years, Pi Beta Phi has led the way in altruistic support. By giving time, money and self, Pi Beta Phis reveal themselves as true angels. Nationally, Pi Beta Phi is known for its commitment to helping others in our community, and locally we strive to reach out to others, especially in the area of literacy.

New! Read Across America is a reading motivation and awareness program which takes place each year on or around March 2, 2006, which is Dr. Seuss's birthday. Sponsored by the NEA, Read Across America enlists individuals and organizations across the country to plan and execute activities that will bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Pi Beta Phi is proud to join more than 40 national organizations as a Read Across America partner.

New! The CARS Literacy Program was adapted by the Links to Literacy Committee in 2003 using the creative concept originated by the Houston, Texas Alumnae Club. The program is designed to serve as a national/international literacy program that all Pi Beta Phi alumnae clubs and collegiate chapters can conduct easily. Targeting children in the 3rd grade who are at a critical juncture in developing both good reading skills and a life-long love of reading, CAR supplements reading activities already being provided in the schools and provides an easy-to-administer program for teachers.

Links to Literacy is Pi Beta Phi's national service project in which all Pi Phi chapters and alumnae clubs are able to participate. In 1990, Links to Literacy was established to provide a service opportunity to the Fraternity's philanthropy emphasis. Chapters assist local agencies or schools with book distribution or one-on-one interaction with pupils who need extra attention as they learn to read.

Program Goals:

  1. To provide service to the community in the area of literacy.
  2. To improve the availability of information and the increased communication regarding the literacy program.
  3. To develop and implement a project dedicated to literacy that is done annually.
  4. To encourage collegian and alumnae interaction for the benefit of literacy.
  5. To involve Greek, campus and community organizations working together to further the cause of literacy.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts began in 1912 as Settlement School and brought education, economic development and health care to rural Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Pi Phis were instrumental in promoting the academic and industrial enrichment of area children, and the Jennie Nicol Health Center was a model for other mountain health facilities until 1965.

Each fall after recruitment Ole Miss Pi Beta Phi participates in Noodles for Knowledge. We sell tickets and host an Italian spaghetti dinner to raise money to donate to our different literacy projects.

In the spring, we host Sweets for Smarts, an ice cream sundae social that also benefits our various literacy related philanthropies. This fundraiser is fun because we host it at our house which we transform into a 1950s style ice cream parlor.
