What is SAF?

In 1996, Ole Miss experienced a tremendous loss when five outstanding students died in separate but equally tragic incidents.  A committee of students decided that something had to be done to keep the lives of these students embedded in the memories of Ole Miss student’s as well as alumni forever.  The Student Advancement Foundation was created and is based on three principles: leadership, loyalty, and scholarship.  So, what does the SAF do?

What is CGC?

The Celebrity Golf Classic’s purpose is to raise money for a scholarship created in memory of the five original students honored by the Student Advancement Foundation.  This will be the tournaments seventh year to run and has memorialized 24 students since 1996.  There is a Celebrity Golf Classic Board of Directors which is appointed and chosen by the chairman of SAF/CGC.  Each board member holds a vital part in making sure the tournament runs smoothly.  Members of SAF volunteer to sell t-shirts, work at the golf tournament, and sell ads for the program.

What is the Student   Memorial Day?

Student Memorial Day is an Ole Miss tradition that began two years ago by a group of students.  The ceremony is loosely based on Texas A&M’s “Muster Day,” which honors A&M’s students whose lives have been lost while fighting for our country in the armed services.  The Student Memorial Day ceremony celebrates those members of the Ole Miss family that we tragically lose each year while attending the university.  The program is offered in conjunction with the annual Celebrity Golf Classic to provide a somber yet special way to honor and remember our lost loved ones.
