Minutes of November 7, 2001 meeting

PRESENT:

The meeting was called to order. President Buddy Kahler welcomed our new members: Mary Harrington and Michele Mize.

There was a correction for the October Minutes. President-Elect Tony Seaman wished to thank Johnny Williams for the hard work he put in to get the current raises given to the EEO category 4.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Staff Council members will serve again at the Exam Breakfast to be on Tuesday, December 11 at 9:00p.m. - 11:00p.m.
The Physical Plant Department has donated their time and effort in making collection boxes for the New York and Washington victims and their families. These boxes will be posted in the Grove and at the Football Stadium during game time.
Fall flu shots are still available to all staff members as of November 7, 2001. Take advantage of the free service.
In coordination with the Oxford Lions Club, Dr. Gloria Kellum asks for all staff and faculty members to donate any old eyeglasses they may not need. These glasses will be taken to a repair shop and will be sent to those who have eye problems. This is a worthy cause for those people who are unable to afford glasses. Please contact Buddy Kahler at 915-7051 if you would like to help.
Dr. Gerald Walton, the former Provost, is in charge of the committee working to establish the Civil Rights Memorial monument that will be placed between the Library and the Lyceum January 2002.
Chancellor Khayat will sponsor the Thanksgiving Luncheon on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 from 11:00 - 1:30.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Financial Report was approved unanimously.
Concerns:
1. Tony Seaman was requested to address the intersection of Hwy 6 and Coliseum Drive as a dangerous hazard in the mornings and during lunch hours. He has spoken with Chief Randy Corbin about this issue. Randy Corbin said that there is a police officer out there directing traffic first thing in the morning and is controlling the situation. At lunch times, there are just not enough police officers to help patrol all areas.
2. Another concern is that some members are feeling left out because their category did not get raises. Human Resources has told us that all categories are being reviewed and will be handled as soon as these categories can be evaluated and as resources become available.
Joni Camp wanted to remind everyone to help sponsor our cops on bikes for United Way. Payment will be based upon what distance they ride. You can specify which agency, out of 17, you would like to support. Our goal is $85,000.
