Call to Order: President Ron Kitchens called the meeting to order at 2:35p.m. Tours of the Anaechoic Chamber began at 2:00pm for Staff Council members.

President Kitchens introduced our guest speaker, George Atkins, Assistant Director for Marketing and Business Development for the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi.

George Atkins informed the Staff Council of some of the functions of NCPA which went from testing wind tunnels to listening to ants and termites, to sound travel of nuclear testing.

Ms. Atkins stated that NCPA receives some of their funding from the Military, so they also have classified facilities. NCPA has a land mine detection program that helps the soldiers locate land mines.

Ms. Atkins also stated that NCPA is researching medical use of lasers to stop cancerous growths and cauterize injuries with internal bleeding. They are looking for ways to reduce noise from airplanes because of hearing loss to landing signal controllers on the carriers and also with noise problems to residential areas from commercial airlines.

NCPA is researching ways to attract fire ants to bait and locating termite infestations.

NCPA ‘s research covers a lot of different areas that are very important and helpful to all of us. The tour of the Anaechoic Chamber was very interesting. I am sure the Staff Council would like to visit again and learn of any new research or results from how to bait fire ants.
