Minutes of the Meeting October 04, 2006                                                     Union 404b

 

Present:  James Akey, Pam Barefield, Debbie Binkley, David Blackmarr, Rachel Bost, Joey Brent, Dennis Bullard, Kim Chrestman, Kim Dixon, Corrie Free, Shellie Harrison, Lance Herrington, Ron Kitchens, Ardessa Minor, Patti Mooney, Paula Park, Randall Pinion, Laurie Richlovsky, Amy Saxton, Benita Whitehorn, Deetra Wiley and Timothy Woodard

Call to Order: President Ron Kitchens called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

 

  President Kitchens introduced our guest speakers, Lynn Sloan and Keith Mansel from Oxford Medical Ministries Clinic. Lynn and Keith informed Staff Council of the new free medical facility coming to Lafayette County. We were also shown a film of other clinics of this type and the great services they are providing for those in need of medical attention that cannot afford to pay for these services.

 

Approval of Minutes: The September minutes were approved with no corrections.

 

Treasurer’s Report: The report had not been submitted at this time.

 

Committee Reports: Deetra Wiley gave a report on the Public Relations Committee meeting.

 

   Laurie Richlovsky gave a report of the Recycling Committee meeting.

 

   President Kitchens stated that the Staff Council elections will be using paper ballots again for the next election but would also be sending information by e-mails.

 

   President Kitchens requested that the Staff Council members who did not remember which Standing Committee they are on to e-mail him so he can inform them of the committee they are on.

 

  

 

Old Business: President Kitchens asked that any member that did not have the Staff Council T-Shirt to let him know what size they needed and requested that all members wear their t-shirts to the monthly meetings.

 

   President Kitchens reiterated the Staff Council policy on absenteeism and how important it is for the members to be present for the monthly meetings and also to participate in Staff Council events. President Kitchens also reiterated that visibility and representation are very important so the Staff of Ole Miss know whom to talk to about concerns they may have. 

          

    The Office of International Programs has requested volunteers for a program called “Planet Partners”. For more information contact Charter Morris at 662-915-7404. Also, Hosts are needed to host International Students. For more information on hosting please contact Donna at 662-915-1557.

 

   President Kitchens stated he is still trying to persuade local businesses to give discounts to the Staff of Ole Miss.

 

  President Kitchens stated he has not received any new information concerning the “Freshman Experience” project.

 

     President requested that the Staff Council committees meet before the next Staff Council meeting on November 01, 2006 and to e-mail him with a short summary of what was discussed.

 

New Business: President Kitchens announced that Chancellor Khayat was highly appreciative of the Staff at Ole Miss who put forth the extra effort the weekend of September 30, 2006 for getting the campus back in order for the Dedication of the Civil Rights Monument after the ball game.

 

There was discussion of the new Staff Council Logo and maybe changing the type of shirts we have from a t-shirt to a Polo type shirt.

 

President Kitchens has request 100% participation from the Staff Council for contributing to United Way.

 

Announcements:  The Staff Council Member of the Month for October is Deetra Wiley.

 

  Susan Neal has resigned from the Staff Council. Kevin Cozart will be replacing Susan.

 

   There was an announcement of a new menu at the Alumni Snack Bar, which will include salads and some great sandwiches.

 

 

Concerns: Amy Saxton had a concern that the Paul B. Johnson Commons Ballroom will be use as a classroom and that it might interfere with plans for Staff Appreciation Week and other events that are held at PBJ. This will be investigated.

 

   President Kitchens had a request that University vehicles, including carts and machinery, not block legally parked vehicles.

   President Kitchens also had a request that security cameras be placed in parking lots or any other places they might be needed to help deter criminal activity. There is a University committee in place to address issues such as these. The concern will be forwarded.

 

  

 

The next meeting will be Nov. 01, 2006 in the Union, room 404b.
