Frequently Asked Questions

A: Orientation is a required program for students (optional for parents) that helps them get ready for the start of school. At orientation, we will cover the topics that will help you prepare for and successfully navigate your first year at Ole Miss. You will also register for classes at the orientation session.

A: Yes. A hold is placed on your record when you are admitted that will not allow you to register for classes until you attend orientation. The three exceptions are:

  1. Readmitted students who have already taken classes at Ole Miss are not required to attend another orientation session.
  2. Students who are attending classes only at a satellite campus (Tupelo, Southaven, etc.) are not required to attend. They attend registration at their respective campuses.
  3. Nondegree seeking students.

If you qualify as one of these three, you should contact the Office of Orientation and Parent Programs at 662-915-7226 to have your hold removed.

A: Housing Hold/PRIORITY: This is the only hold that must be cleared in order to register for an orientation session. A housing hold means that you need to apply for and pay your deposit for student housing. This must be done before you can register for orientation. If you are not a freshman or are living within the accepted radius of campus, you can opt out of on-campus student housing.

Health Hold/PRIORITY: A health hold means that you need to fill out and submit the two required health forms: the certificate of compliance and health history. While a health hold will not prevent you from registering for orientation, it will prevent you from registering for classes during your orientation session. Therefore, we recommend that you fill out and submit these forms well in advance of your orientation session. At the very least, bring the forms to your session so the Student Health Center can clear your hold at that time.

Adviser Hold/NORMAL: An adviser hold means you need to meet with an adviser to plan your course schedule. This happens at orientation or pre-assignment each semester. Your hold will be cleared after you meet with your adviser.

Orientation Hold/NORMAL: This simply means that you have not yet signed up for an orientation session. When you do, the hold will be lifted automatically. If you are a new student and choose not to attend an orientation session, you will be unable to register for classes and will still be charged the orientation fee. The only way to register for classes is to come to an orientation session and meet with your adviser then.

Please note that the above holds are related to orientation. Please contact individual offices for any other holds.

A: After you sign up and pay for a session, an e-mail confirming your reservation and payment of orientation fees will be mailed to your Ole Miss e-mail account unless you specify that you want it mailed to another e-mail address. In that case, it will be sent to both accounts. If you pre-register for an orientation, then you will not receive a confirmation until payment is received in the orientation office.

Top

A: When we get your payment, we’ll finish the registration for you, and you will receive an e-mail confirmation for your session exactly as if you had paid with a credit card. Your registration is not complete until we have received payment. Remember, this confirmation is sent to your Ole Miss e-mail address only.

A: No. The bursar’s office sends out bills for all new students who have attended an orientation session and registered for classes. Your semester fees for tuition, meal plans, housing and parking decal will be included on the bill. Students pay for books separately (usually when picking them up at the beginning of the semester), though many reserve them while at orientation.

A: We strongly encourage parents, guardians, significant others and/or other family members to attend orientation. So much information is new and sometimes confusing; it really helps to have (at least!) two sets of ears.

Top

A: You’ll do pretty much everything you need to do to get ready for the fall semester (except move in to a residence hall). A lot more will get done than you might think!

A: Comfortably! You will be outside quite a bit and will probably walk all over the place. We recommend shorts, short sleeves and tennis shoes or flip-flops/sandals. Click here for some images of what to and not to wear to orientation.

A: Yes, if you leave you will miss something important! You’re here to learn about your first year at Ole Miss and get off on the right foot. It’s in your best interest to be here for all sessions.

A: Visa or MasterCard, debit or credit cards (if paying online); check, money order or cash if you mail in your reservation form. (We do not recommend sending cash through the mail.)

Top

A: No, we can’t do that at this time.

Top

A: No, but this option is available. Be sure to mark the appropriate box when you register for orientation.

A: Check your ID and password, and make sure they are correct. If you think they are the problem, check with our IT Helpdesk at helpdesk@olemiss.edu, or call them at 662-915-5222. If the problem is something else (credit card, etc.), call us at 662-915-7226, or e-mail us at orientation@olemiss.edu, and we’ll help you get it straight.

A: We will do our best to make sure you get the classes you need. We are always able to make sure that students get the classes they need by the first few days of the semester, even if those classes are not available at your specific orientation session. You might need to visit a few professors, an adviser or a dean’s office, but you will be able to build a schedule that works for you. Once you start school, you will be in the regular rotation of advising, so you shouldn’t run into any problems in the future.

A: You can have your Ole Miss ID card made ahead of time and mailed back to you before your orientation session. If you are staying on campus during your session, you will need your ID card to access the residence hall in which you are staying. Also, two forms of ID are needed to rent a post office box (for example, a driver’s license and student ID).
Other advantages to getting your ID made ahead of time are that you won’t stand in line waiting to take your picture at orientation, and you choose the picture that will be on the ID instead of taking the picture here.
Mail the following items to the address below to have your ID made before orientation:

  • A photo of yourself (Simple head shots are best, color is preferred. Please, no full-body shots, hats, head coverings or sunglasses; this will cause the ID center to reject your photo.)
  • Your full name
  • Your Ole Miss ID number or Social Security number

Send to:
Ole Miss ID Center
P.O. Box 1848
University, MS 38677-1848
The ID Center staff will make your ID card and mail it back to you, saving you valuable time while at orientation. For more information, call the ID Center at 662-915-7423, or click here to go to the center’s Web site.

A: No. While you can visit with an adviser prior to your session, you cannot register for classes at that time. You can register for classes only at an orientation session. Also, remember that orientation provides you with a lot more information than just scheduling classes and only lasts a day (or less for some). That one day can make a lot of difference and is worth it.

A: Not at this time. Most rent a car and drive down. For more information on travel arrangements, click here.

A: This means that a student, after scheduling classes, can reserve his or her textbooks with the university bookstore. By filling out a short online form, providing the class schedule and leaving a debit or credit card number, the bookstore staff will pull the textbooks from the shelves, box them up and have them waiting for you when the semester begins. This gives you first shot at used books, which can mean big savings. Pre-pack is available online or at orientation.

Textbook Pre-Orders
The Ole Miss Bookstore encourages you to purchase your textbooks online by following three easy steps:

  • 1. REGISTER for your classes in myOlemiss. At the end of registration, look for the “order my textbooks” link at the top of the page.
  • 2. CONNECT- with one click- to all of the textbooks you’ll need for your new classes. You’re guaranteed to get the right books.
  • 3. BUY all of your textbooks for the upcoming semester. Have them delivered or pick them up during move-in at the bookstore located on the bottom floor of the student union.
Contact the Ole Miss Bookstore Textbook department with any questions you may have by telephone at (662)915-7137.

A: A post office box is not required; however, the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver mail to the residence halls. You can rent a P.O. box from the post office in the Student Union during orientation. If you have a mailing address other than a residence hall where you can receive mail, then you do not need a P.O. box.

Top

A: Yes. The cost is $25 per night, per person. Your parents can stay together, but they will be in a different residence hall from you. Pack accordingly. If only one parent is attending orientation and staying in the residence hall, every effort will be made to offer your parent a private room. If your parent is attending Orientation with another parent they know, they are welcomed to share a room if requested.

A: If you would like to tour our halls during the academic year, please call the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services at 662-915-7226 to set up a tour. During summer orientation, the housing office opens a model room in most halls for student and parent viewing. Some halls are not available for viewing if extensive maintenance is scheduled during the summer. The tour hours for these halls are announced at orientation.

A: Students who turn in their housing application before February 15 will be placed in the first round of assignments and will receive information concerning their building assignment around the beginning of June through their My Ole Miss account. Roommate information will follow during the middle of July.

Housing applications received after February 15 will typically be placed in the second round of assignments, and building and roommate information for these students will be mailed out during the middle of July. You will be able to access your specific room assignment through your My Ole Miss account.

A: Of course, every orientation session has at least one day when all offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual appointments can be made. Offices you may be interested in visiting are financial aid, dean’s offices, the bursar’s office and student disability services. You can visit just about anyone else you need to see.
