What to Bring to Orientation

Well, the most important thing is a positive attitude and willingness to participate in the program. But the following also will be helpful:

    1. Something to take notes on. We do provide several blank pages in the parent handbook for notes, but the pages are slick, and sometimes our dedicated note-takers run out of space!
    2. A light sweater or jacket. The air conditioning is pretty strong inside, and it gets a little chilly.
    3. Comfortable, light clothing. Don’t go out and buy new stuff! The dress is very casual. You will be walking in the heat and then sitting in cold air conditioning for the rest of the day. Please dress comfortably!

    4. An umbrella in case of rain.
    5. A debit card (or credit card if you must) to reserve pre-packed textbooks for your student and for miscellaneous purchases.
    6. The money to rent a P.O. box—$27 will cover your student for a year.

Overnight Stay

If you are staying in a residence hall, we provide sheets (top and bottom) and towels for the bathroom:

    • Be sure to pack a separate bag. You will not stay in the same hall as your student.
    • Bring your own pillow, pillow case, blanket (sometimes it gets chilly at night), alarm clock, cell phone (the rooms do not have phones) and anything else you think you might need for the room for comfort (maybe a pair of earplugs if you are a light sleeper or a fan if you need background noise to sleep).
    • Bring bathroom shoes. It’s communal living. Plan accordingly.
    • Parents will be able to stay in a private room or with their spouse or traveling companion until all rooms are filled, at which point another parent may be assigned to stay with you (moms with moms, dads with dads, etc.) While this rarely happens, it is a possibility if many parents choose the overnight on campus housing option.
