Brief Bio

Katherine Dooley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Dr. Dooley received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida under the supervision of David Reitze. She then carried out postdoctoral appointments at the Albert-Einstein-Institut (Max Planck Institut für Gravitationsphysik) in Hannover, Germany and at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. Dr. Dooley works in the field of experimental gravitational-wave physics. She spent 7 years helping build and commission the multi-kilometer-long interferometers in Livingston, LA and in Hannover, Germany. Dr. Dooley is now interested in the development of instrumentation and experimental techniques to further improve the detectors' sensitivity to gravitational waves. The first direct detection of gravitational waves was made in Sep. 2015, a momentous event that proved Einstein correct once again and launched the new field of gravitational wave astronomy.
