Brief Bio

Paul K. Lago is Chair and Professor of Biology. Dr. Lago received his Ph.D in Entomology from North Dakota State University in 1976 and joined the faculty at Ole Miss in August of that year. He teaches freshman biology courses for science majors, as well as courses in Entomology and Ornithology. In 1995, Dr. Lago won the Cora Lee Graham Award for Outstanding Teaching of Freshman. Dr. Lago has published 64 papers during his career, which cover a wide range of faunistic studies of Mississippi and Alabama arthropods, including caddisflies (Trichoptera), Neuroptera, flies (Diptera) and beetles (Coleoptera). Within these papers are the descriptions of numerous species of insects new to science. The main focus of his work has been the scarab beetles (Scarabaeoidea) of Mississippi, which includes the May beetles and their allies and many dung beetles. He also is revising the genus Serica for the New World and is finishing a work on the Astaena of Central America (both are small May beetles). His work has been funded by NASA, USDA and the Mississippi Fish and Game Department.
