ABSTRACT

An Analysis of Item Bias on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test- Third Edition

The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of negative and/or positive bias of items on the ZPeabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Third Edition(PPVT-III; Dunn & Dunn, 1997) towards African American third-grade children. The identification of negative and/or positive bias was accomplished by performing an item analysis. The participants in this investigation were ten normally developing third-grade African American children from northern Mississippi. The PPVT-III was administered to each participant individually. The results revealed that some items may be considered too easy resulting in a positive bias, and others more difficult resulting in a negative bias for this group of children. The results have clinical implications for speech-language pathologists, who utilize the PPVT-III to assess children’s vocabulary development and to determine eligibility for speech and language services.
