ABSTRACT

Teacher Perceptions of Inclusive Education

This paper examines the perceptions of inclusive education by educators. Inclusion is based on a philosophy that believes in helping students with disabilities and their teachers become successful creators of new visions for schools and communities. Inclusion presents both advantages and disadvantages. Positive perceptions and feelings encourage appropriate policies and support integration of the students with disabilities. However, currently, many teachers do not agree with inclusion because they feel that the students with disabilities will be teased, ridiculed, and/or isolated. Although negative attitudes presently occur, many studies suggest that teacher’s perceptions may be changing. Inclusion tends to lift barriers in the larger society if the negative attitudes of educators are positive.
