COMMENTS:
The McNair Program provided me with a great summer experience. I learned GRE test taking strategies and improved my research skills. My mentor, Dr. Dawn Wilkins, was very helpful with my research. I encourage others to consider this program.

ABSTRACT

Accessed Denied: Denial of Service (DoS) and Its Effects on Businesses and Methods of Future Prevention

Businesses with Internet infrastructures are prone to denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. In addition, businesses technical support personnel have limited knowledge about computer security. Most core curriculums in undergraduate computer science programs do not require courses in Information Security or Computer Security. This research discusses the techniques of hackers, hackers’ motivation, and methods for preventing future DoS attacks. Since distributed denial of service makes use of other “accomplice” computers, often without the knowledge of the owner, increased awareness of the problem is necessary. This research also summarizes prevention techniques to decrease this problem.
