COMMENTS:
It has been a true privilege and honor to be a part of the Ronald E. McNair Program. Not only did I learn a tremendous deal about research and presentation, but I have gained friendships that will last a lifetime. I appreciate the opportunity given to me by Dr. Cole and Ms. Demetria Hereford. I further appreciate my mentor, Dr. Brad Schultz, for his time, effort, and contributions to my research. This summer will forever be an impact on my life.

ABSTRACT

Sports Commentary: Strong Enough for a Man But Played by a Woman

This study applied gender, social, feminist, and sports theory to the commentary of female and male athletes during live sports events. A content analysis was conducted to analyze commentary for men’s and women’s professional basketball games. Results showed significant differences between male and female athletes in terms of sexual objectification and promotion. The overall purpose of this study was to further previous research conducted on the inequalities of broadcast commentary between men’s athletics and athletes and women’s athletics and athletes.
