ABSTRACT

“It’s My Kitchen, and I like it that Way”: A Look at Gender Egalitarianism among Women in Married and Cohabiting Households

Studies have shown that the marriage rate among women is declining while the cohabitation rate among them continues to increase. These findings lead many to believe that women are finding marriages too gender restrictive which causes them to seek independence and autonomy in cohabiting relationships. Through a look at the traditionally gendered activity of housework in married and cohabiting households, this research attempts to discover if women are truly tied down by gender roles in marriages and if cohabiting relationships gives them the freedom of equality. This research proposes that there are no differences in the female performance of housework between marriages and cohabiting households and that gender egalitarianism and traditionalism in housework is dependent upon a number of factors.
