ABSTRACT

Solution to Shortage of Ph.D.s in Accountancy

The purpose of this study was to analyze the causes and possible solutions for the shortage of Ph.D.s in accountancy. Currently, there is not a central source of information regarding doctoral programs. Thus, the goal of this research was to produce a directory of doctoral programs in accounting that would assist candidates in selecting a school. This study assessed potential candidates and current Ph.D. students to determine: (1) The factors that influence the choice of doctoral program and (2) What factors are anticipated to hinder someone from entering and completing a doctoral program.

The results showed that financial aid and accreditation were perceived as the factors that influence the choice of a doctoral program the most. Financial aid was most likely to hinder completion of a doctoral program. Based on the results, a sample directory of Southern universities describing the doctoral program in accounting was prepared as a solution to the shortage. The sample directory seeks to provide better information to potential doctoral students so that they can best match a program to their needs.
