ABSTRACT

The Challenge to Broadcast Journalism in Mississippi: The Breakthrough of Diversity and Gender

This research analyzes a particular perspective of the Civil Rights era of a 1960 case about race and the right to speak up and act against WLBT-Channel 3’s broadcasting. By revisiting this historic case, which lasted almost 16 years, one will understand how the broadcast industry began hiring black employees and introducing black views and opinions to the world. This research highlights the progress made in broadcast television regarding the inclusion of African-American men and women in the industry from the 1960s to the 21stcentury. The research method used includes published reports on the current status and comparative statistical analysis of minorities and females in the United States involved in broadcast. This research provides evidence that African-American women have and are overcoming many social and cultural barriers in broadcasting.
