ABSTRACT

Teachers’ Roles in Classroom Settings: How They Support the Use of Standard American English

In this paper, the following question will be investigated: How do teachers in public schools support the use of Standard American English in highly impoverished, predominately African America settings? Research states that many African American students use Black Vernacular English (also known as African American Vernacular English, Ebonics, or slang) not only in the communities in which they live but also in the schools in which they attend (Delpit, 1998; Hoover, 1998; Smith, 1998). The scope of this research focuses on what teachers are doing to combat this issue so that African American students are able to effectively communicate with people of different backgrounds.
