ABSTRACT

Representations, Perceptions, and Stereotypes of African Americans and Generation Y in the Reality Televisions Shows College Hill: Atlanta &The Real World: Hollywood

This research discusses and evaluates stereotypical behavior and perceptions of African American culture and Generation Y in reality television shows College Hill: Atlanta and The Real World: Hollywood, two highly rated reality TV shows, highlight the lives of African American college students, post-college adults, and Generation –Yers. The mission of this research is to determine if the representations are parallel to reality, or if stereotypes are evident in each and/or both shows. This research is significant because those who have roles as reality TV stars are not only representing themselves, they are reflective of their race, nationality, and gender. This study finds that stereotypical characteristics are real and are depicted in each show by people of all races and cultures. Although Caucasian individuals exhibited stereotypical behaviors, the frequency of the behaviors was highest among African Americans.
