“We are excited to have a new group beginning their journey,” said Dr. Andy Mullins, the Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Teacher Corps. “They seem very bright and ready to get to work. This is the youngest class we have ever had. The average age is 23. So, they are young, but last year’s class was also young and we are very happy with that group.”
The Class of 2008 has more than one participant from several schools. There are five participants from the graduating class of Williams College, followed by the University of Mississippi (4), Harvard (3), Amherst (3), and Brown (2).
“The goal is to get more and more competitive each year,” said Mr. Guest. “400 applications for 30 spots gives us, hopefully, an outstanding group of people who will become, with time and training, outstanding teachers.”

“I wish there were some way I could communicate to the incoming first-years how difficult and how challenging and how rewarding this year is going to be,” said Mr. Mason Cole, a member of the Class of 2007. “I’m exhausted.”
“Having just finished my first year,” said Mr. Cole, “the biggest reward has been seeing students go beyond what I thought, and probably beyond what they thought, they were capable of. I had one student who liked the novel To Kill a Mockingbird so much she went out and bought her own copy.”
The Class of 2008 will start teaching summer school on Tuesday, June 6th at Holly Springs High School. Holly Springs is a critical-needs area. The lead teachers will be second-year MTC teachers. Students will be learning math, English, biology, French, Spanish, and Social Studies.
"We're very excited about this partnership with MTC," said Ms. Irene Walton, the Interim Superintendent of the Holly Springs School District.
Molly Goldwasser, from Duke University, is this year's Summer Intern. "Everything about my time here has been much better than I could have imagined, and I came in with some pretty high hopes," said Molly.

The Mississippi Teacher Corps is the most competitive alternate-route teaching program in the country. It is a two-year program that recruits recent college graduates to teach in critical-shortage areas in the Mississippi Delta, in exchange for a full scholarship for a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Mississippi. The program was founded in 1989 by Amy Gutman, a Harvard University graduate student, and Dr. Andy Mullins, then Special Assistant to the State Superintendent of Education. Since 1989 more than 350 participants, reaching an estimated 70,000 students, have taught in critical-needs school districts as part of the Mississippi Teacher Corps.
