Alumni of the Month - June

Alumni of the Month Archives
  Jeff Spanogle

The Alumni of the Month page is a new addition to highlight alumni of the MTC Program and their current activities. The Alumni for the Month of June is Jeff Spanogle (Class of 2004).  He taught at mathematics at Yazoo City during his time in the Mississippi Teacher Corps program.

While at Yazoo City, he taught Algebra I, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, and AP Calculus.  His first year Algebra I class had the highest passing rate of any teacher at the school and he received the Teacher of the Year award for his outstanding performance.  During the second year, he worked to bring back the AP program by teaching an AP Calculus class.

After graduating from the Mississippi Teacher Corps in May 2006, Jeff entered Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson Mississippi to continue his graduate education.  His plan is to pursue a Ph.D. in Philosophy to teach at the college or university level.  He is currently concentrating on the ancient Greek and Hebrew languages along with Akkadian – an earlier Semitic language which forms the basis for Hebrew.  He also works at a youth center in Yazoo City called the Way Café (www.thewaycafe.org) which gives the kids of Yazoo a place to hang out on the weekends.  The Way Café is run by a conglomerate group of individuals and founded in part by another MTC alumnus Carol Hill (Class of 1998).

In addition to graduate school and the Way Café, Jeff helps to maintain the MTC Website throughout the year.  Updating pages and fixing links, he assists Ben Guest to produce one of the best websites for alternate route teaching programs in the country.  This June, the MTC Website was reorganized to give a cleaner, more straightforward look from the inside out.  The latest additions, the Alumni of the Month and Video of the Month, will post current information on alumni of the program and videos from YouTube of current MTC members.

“Last year it was a major overhaul to produce a sleek and tighter interface,” said Jeff.  “This year, we arranged the inside structure and cut out much of what was obsolete.  Some of the website was moved to Wiki which is a great resource that can be edited by other people as well.  I know this website will continue to be a good resource for teachers.  It’s also a great way to allow prospective teachers to see what the program is like.  Overall, the site makes an awesome advertisement for the Mississippi Teacher Corps program.”

The Website has over 450 pages of information and more teacher resources than any other teaching website.  The Website is also currently expanding to Wiki and YouTube allowing for people to freely add information and view videos on the internet.  Check out the MTC Wikipedia website here and the current YouTube videos of the 1st years introducing themselves here.
