Sheref Edwards, Class of 2004, grew up in a poor neighborhood in Columbus, Mississippi. Sheref and his brother were raised by his maternal grandmother. "She raised us to be responsible," says Sheref. At Mississippi State Sheref saw how unprepared some of his classmates were in math. "It was due to the lack of preparation they received in high school," he says. This sparked his decision to become a math teacher. |
"I knew I wanted to help kids from the same background as myself. I knew I could be a role-model for them." Sheref teaches math and is the assistant coach for the boys' basketball team at Coffeeville High School in Coffeeville. "I really enjoy it," says Sheref. "It's not my job to change the world, but I'm obligated to influence these young people, these future doctors, lawyers, engineers and public officials who will change the world." |
