Profile of the Month - November 2005 Aaron Thompson

“Growing up in Mississippi, I have seen first-hand the inequalities of the educational system,” says Aaron Thompson, Class of 2005.  “While I was fortunate in that I attended one of the state’s best public schools, I realized as a college student the divisions still inherent in our schools.”

Aaron attended Tupelo High School and then the Honors College at the University of Mississippi.  Debra Young, the Assistant Dean of the Honors College, says of Aaron: “I hold him in high regard-for his impressive mind and his equally impressive character.”

Aaron is teaching English and Spanish at Simmons High School in Hollandale.  Hollandale is a town of about 3,000 people.  “We’ve had a long line of MTC teachers in Hollandale,” says Ben Guest, the Program Manager for the Teacher Corps.  “In fact, the Principal of the elementary school, Mr. Gerald George, is an MTC alum.  We have six teachers, including Aaron who are there now.”

“I know, beyond doubt, that my life goal is to be an effective teacher,” says Aaron.  “I have been blessed beyond measure, and I want the opportunity to give back through changing children’s lives.”
