Profile of the Month - October 2005 Darrell Moton

Darrell Moton, MTC Class of 2004, grew up in the Mississippi Delta.  As a native of Clarksdale he has seen first-hand how difficult the challenges can be for young people in a “critical-needs” area.

Darrell is happy to now teach at the school he once attended, Clarksdale High School, but he is even more happy that Mississippi is getting so many good teachers through the Mississippi Teacher Corps.

“I am impressed by their content knowledge but I’m even more impressed by their character,” said Darrell of his Teacher Corps classmates.  “It’s an emotional experience for me having grown up in the Delta and now seeing so many wonderful, dedicated people wanting to teach the kids in the Delta.  I will be life-long friends with my classmates.”

Darrell enjoys teaching Biology, Anatomy, and Physical Science at Clarksdale High.  “I love it.  It is the most rewarding career I could have chosen.  I can’t picture myself doing anything else.”

After graduating from Clarksdale High Darrell attended the University of Mississippi, where he majored in Biology.  He is impressed with the Teacher Corps.  “I love MTC.  They recruit the best from across the country, and offer the best training.  Some programs strand people after the initial training.  Not MTC.  There is constant development and mentoring as well as the classwork.  I feel bad for people in those other programs.”
