“When I started we were based in Jackson,” said Whitney. “All the recruitment and selection was out of Jackson but the training was out of Ole Miss. In 1993 we moved everything to Ole Miss. Nineteen-ninety three was a big year as we changed the program from a one-year program to a two-year program. We also secured funding from the state legislature.
"Previously we raised all of the money from various organizations, and at one point in 1992 it looked like we were going to have to close down. So to have steady funding from the legislature was important.”

“Working with Teacher Corps was exciting,” said Whitney. “I enjoyed meeting the recruits from all over the country.”
When asked to describe the typical Teacher Corps participant Whitney said, “They’re intelligent, creative, idealistic, and usually late! One of the things I witnessed was that people came in with set expectations and the reality of their teaching experience was oftentimes different from those expectations.”
Whitney is married to Mr. Neville Webb, and they have one son, Dixon. In 1997 she completed her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Ole Miss. She is currently the Program Director for the Mississippi Teacher Fellowship Program: www.mtfp.net. |
