Profile of the Month - January 2005 Clint Blacker

Clint Blacker , Mississippi Teacher Corps Class of 2003 , grew up in Burns, Oregon . Clint attended Oregon State University where he majored in Computer Science and History. Clint remains a dedicated fan of Oregon State athletics.

While at Oregon State Clint worked as a tutor, volunteered as a youth basketball coach, and worked with youth in Coney Island , New York as part of a service project. It was these experiences that shaped Clint's desire to teach.

“Working as a tutor reinforced my desire to teach because of the satisfaction I received in helping others to learn and succeed,” said Clint.

Clint spent his first year teaching math at North Delta Alternative School in Sumner. North Delta serves as the alternative school for West Tallehatchie School District . Students who are suspended or dismissed from regular school are sent here. Clint was chosen as teacher-of-the-year.

Clint is currently teaching at Gentry High School in Indianola. Although he enjoyed teaching at North Delta, Clint wanted the opportunity to have a regular classroom with a set schedule and roster of students.

The Mississippi Teacher Corps is a two-year program that recruits recent college graduates to teach in critical-shortage areas in the Mississippi Delta, in exchange for a full scholarship for a masters' degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Mississippi . The program was founded in 1989 by Amy Gutman, a Harvard University graduate and Dr. Andy Mullins , current Special Assistant to the Chancellor of Ole Miss. Since 1989 more than 300 participants, reaching an estimated 4,500 students, have taught in critical-needs school districts as part of the Mississippi Teacher Corps.
