"Fair comes once a year and lasts for a week – be just"
If I wear more armor than the other knight, I should survive with less bruises; while life is not always fair, it does reward those who give hard work and their best effort. Often my students complained about being treated unfairly and it was impossible to be completely fair. I have substituted being just for being fair; it is the one thing students accept better than fair and is far easier to put into practice. Students are notoriously deceptive and devious to their own advantage. Once it is known that they will be treated justly for what they have done, it is much easier to establish order and discipline. Of course which comes first – order and discipline or the rule of justice? It is a strange balance of wisdom, perception, and analysis. Discipline procedures work well but only when well executed with experience and integrity that students can tangibly see.
I remember having several rules and discipline procedures to manage misbehavior my first year. They worked well when I used them, but I had problems being consistent and foreseeing issues arise out of seemingly trivial mishaps. The first year is probably the most difficult year for the school of hard knocks. After starting back from Christmas, I was determined to be more proactive in my discipline and seek to be firm and treat everyone how they deserved to be treated. It was a hard going at first; kids usually take time to adjust to new teachers and I had changed enough to be a new teacher entirely. Consistency occurred for the students as the principle of “Reap what you sow.” If they sowed a more disruptive attitude or accomplishment, they received a more severe consequence. I also got more creative with the punishments and disciplines as I got to know my students.
