Philosophy of Education

This is my philosophy of education. The link for MS Word file is here: Link to Educational Philosophy

Teaching is a draining, thankless, and depressing machine of war at times and while it is a job, it helps to have motivation to continue pushing me through the rough times.  Here enters my philosophy of education; the golden ideals which gives sanity, reason and hope in what I am doing.  The hope that I am accomplishing these goals gives me the necessary energy to push forward and see a brighter tomorrow.
My ideals in education would be fit closest to the progressive education as introduced by John Dewey.  His motto was, “Education is life itself,” and I firmly believe that our purpose in education is to educate the whole of the student not just academics.  In my experience of teaching, I have found students were best motivated to learn when a project was given relating real life experiences or occupations to the subject matter.  Students would much rather build a bridge and break it through a stress test than try to think through the architecture of bridge design.
I believe each child needs an education not only in the classical subjects of mathematics, literature, and the sciences but also in fields that allow them to live in an ever changing society.  I believe the goal of education is to enlighten the individual to learn how to think and adapt to educate themselves.  If we taught each student to think and adapt, we would be teaching them for life and any of its curves.  There is universal truth woven throughout the world and when it is understood, it allows the individual to understand who they are and their purpose.  Education allows an individual to know who they are, what their purpose is, and how to fulfill that purpose.
Education is a tool used to achieve an end and this end is the completion of the individual as a productive, self-sustaining, cognitive piece of the fabric of society.
