  • Summer Internship

The Mississippi Teacher Corps offers Amherst College students the opportunity to intern with MTC over the summer. The Summer Internship open to rising to rising college seniors, juniors, and sophomores.  The internship is open only to Amherst College students which funds the internship through the Amherst Select Internship Program.

The Mississippi Teacher Corps Summer Internship, which runs from June 1st to July 31st, has six components:

    1. Assisting with the running of the MTC Summer School in Holly Springs. This involves: working with the summer school principalinteracting with parents and staff; observing classes; and helping to run after-school activities.
    2. Working at the main MTC office. This includes: interviewing principals and superintendents about the performance on the MTC teachers; taking photos for the MTC website; and helping to set the fall recruiting agenda.
    3. Visiting the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation. Each intern spends two days at the institute working on a project of the Institute’s choosing.
    4. Researching a specific topic. Each intern chooses a topic of study during the summer. At the end of the summer, each intern is responsible for presenting a project (a paperfilmmultimedia, etc.) on the topic of study. Past topics have included: the connection between poverty and wrongful imprisonment; the importance of early childhood education; and the experience of several “Lost Boys of Sudan” here in Mississippi.
    5. Attending the speaker series. We generally bring in two speakers each week to address the interns. Past speakers have included Dr. Andy Mullins (University of Mississippi), Dr. John Winkle (UM), Sandra Knispel (Mississippi Public Broadcasting), and Tucker Carrington (Mississippi Innocence Project).
    6. Field Trips. The internship usually includes at least two field trips: a tour of several towns in the Mississippi Delta and a visit to the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.
