Alumnus turns his pharmacy into a multimillion-dollar business

Southern Discount Drugs and Diabetic Shoppe CEO Robert Salmon of Charleston

Robert Salmon (BSPh 67) and his pharmacy technician began packaging diabetic-testing supplies in the back room of his drugstore and mailing them to patients in 1995. Today, Salmon's pharmacy and The Diabetic Shoppe have an economic impact of $13 million annually and comprise Tallahatchie County's third largest business.

$10 million grant to expand UM's neuroscience research

The faculty is conducting preclinical studies on promising drug candidates and drug-delivery systems, thanks to a five-year, $10 million Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence grant from the National Institutes of Health for Phase II of UM's Center of Research Excellence in Natural Products Neuroscience.

Assistant professor discusses diabetes care at D.C. forum

Courtney Davis believes in empowering diabetic patients. "We can't go home with them, so helping them feel empowered and able to manage their diabetes is what helps them succeed," Davis said. She discussed that very thing at an American Diabetes Association forum in October.

Professor serves on Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board

Allison Bell is working to shape health care in her state by serving on the Mississippi Division of Medicaid's Drug Utilization Review Board. This month, Bell attended her first meeting with the group, which ensures Medicaid beneficiaries receive optimal but cost-effective drug therapies.

David McCaffrey has been doing a bang-up job of advising students for 16 years. He reminds them that they are talented and have what it takes to succeed. He also tells them to treat their education as if it were a regular day job. The National Academic Advising Association recognized his efforts in October.
