Pharmacy students administer more than 300 flu shots

Pharmacy students administer flu shots to Chancellor Dan Jones and School of Pharmacy Dean David D. Allen.

Immunization certified pharmacy students administered 305 flu shots on the University of Mississippi Oxford campus the first two weeks of October. The shots were given in conjunction with Operation Immunization, a campaign to raise awareness of immunizations and the number of adults being immunized. It also enabled students to practice their skills while giving back to their community.

Report reveals health significance of endangered plants

Many plants facing extinction may contain metabolites that can fight disease, according to a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The article by School of Pharmacy scientists and others describes the human health implications associated with the protection and assessment of threatened and endangered plants.

More than 50 donors become 1908 Society members

As soon as the 1908 Society was created in 2012 to recognize those who provide financial support to the School of Pharmacy each year, the school’s dean, David D. Allen, and his wife, Loree, became its first members. This year, more than 50 other donors joined the Allens in contributing $1,000 or more to the school.

Scientists receive $300,000 grant to buy supercomputer

The Mississippi Center for Supercomputing Research will house a new cluster of graphics processing units funded by a National Science Foundation grant.

Researchers and students across Mississippi will soon have access to a highly advanced supercomputer, thanks to a $300,000 grant awarded to a consortium of scientists led by researchers at Ole Miss. Instrumentation purchased with the grant will impact the state’s science and engineering education and research programs for years to come.

Students organize event to connect with Jackson community

Eager to put what they are learning to use in their community, pharmacy students organized a health awareness event at Jackson’s Parham Bridges Park. There, about 30 students measured the blood glucose levels, blood pressure and body mass index of park visitors and talked to them about their medications, vaccinations and services pharmacists provide today.

Alumni turn campus business into a music industry icon

Malaco founder Tommy Couch Sr. (left) and business manager Stewart Madison pose on either side of the yet-to-be-unveiled historic marker designating the company's inclusion on the Mississippi Blues Trail.

Some of the hottest groups being booked for parties at the Phi Kappa Alpha house at Ole Miss in the early 1960s were black rhythm and blues bands. They were brought to the Pike house by Tommy Couch Sr. (BSPh 65) and Gerald “Wolf” Stephenson (BSPh 66), then partners in Campus Attractions. Since then, the two have turned their passion for soul and R&B music into an industry icon.
