NCNPR celebrates 20th anniversary

From a modest beginning, the National Center for Natural Products Research has grown significantly over the past two decades.

The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy’s National Center for Natural Products Research is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Since its creation in 1995, the NCNPR’s mission has been to discover, develop and commercialize natural products as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The center is a leader in multiple areas of natural products research and has achieved global renown.

Students conduct research in ancient Polish forest

Students and professors from the University of Mississippi spent six weeks exploring Poland’s Bialowieza Forest this summer. Untouched by human hands for hundreds of years, the ancient forest holds potential for the discovery of new natural products. The group’s research could help unlock some of the world’s major health problems.

Students help protect UM, community during flu season

First-year professional pharmacy student Christian Robinson administers a flu shot.

In conjunction with the national Operation Immunization campaign, students at the School of Pharmacy are doing their part to administer flu shots to members of the university community. This year, the students plan to increase the campaign’s reach by partnering with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, School of Nursing and Student National Pharmaceutical Association.

Miller balances athletics and academics

With her junior year coming to an end and one more year of eligibility to play soccer, Jennifer Miller had a decision to make. The first-year professional pharmacy student and midfielder for the Ole Miss soccer team decided to continue to play her favorite sport while enrolling in a rigorous academic program. Both on and off the field, she sets the bar high.

Professor’s research protects, restores marine ecosystems

Slattery’s research frequently requires deep reef dives.

Pharmacognosy professor and environmental toxicologist Marc Slattery has traveled all over the world — from the Bahamas to Antarctica — to do his research. Originally trained in marine biology, Slattery has studied and attempted to preserve a variety of ocean ecosystems. Lately, he has focused on work close to home on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
